Better icons

When creating online catalogs, icons are pulled from commercial photography that may have included backgrounds or imagery that doesn't match the design for the website. Typically, a good clean and consistent background color makes iconification much easier.

Batching square icons

We have various images with various aspect ratios and need to create uniform square icons. Forunately, all our images have the same background color (white) so that simplifies this job.

Create new set

First, we go to Photoshop's History, Action tab and click on the folder icon to create a new set.

Dumb web management

Wasting time to update website

I enjoy some of the cartoons on BusinessGuysonBusinessTrips.com. You should check it out. This caption captures the methodology of many businesses. Dumb, slow, unnecessary and broken.

Does your design flex?

Does your website flex? In other words, does it change to better fit the screen of your viewer? Perhaps this isn't a big concern for your projcet. For example, most design clients want a fixed design so it looks the same on all screens and a little dead space doesn't bother them. But, what about sites optimized for wide monitors that break when viewed on lower resolution?

The value of layered graphic files

Business owners seldom care to learn a great deal about graphic design, but understanding the value and meaning of owning layered, original source and vector graphics will save money, time and help you keep your artwork reconsistent. The reasons for keeping artwork, like logos, consistent is a much longer conversation about brand impressions. It's expensive and time consuming to reproduce artwork or hack on old artwork that isn't saved in a format that allows incremental modification for a new ad piece or website update.

MySpace UI gotchas

There is no single dashboard where you can configure your basic settings. An example of this challenge is the MySpace URL, which you can only set once and are never allowed to change once set. If you click on Home, it appears directly below your profile pic. Elsewhere, there is no indication where or how you may change your URL.
