Does your design flex?

Does your website flex? In other words, does it change to better fit the screen of your viewer? Perhaps this isn't a big concern for your projcet. For example, most design clients want a fixed design so it looks the same on all screens and a little dead space doesn't bother them. But, what about sites optimized for wide monitors that break when viewed on lower resolution?

In the example below, a website has a fixed image (small jpeg) for the background. The big "Exclusive Opportunity" link is anchored to the bottom and right of the screen, so no matter how large the screen is, it will be on the lower right part of the screen.

Design where links flex to fit smaller screens

Below is the same design on higher screen resolution. The site keeps its feel and basic look, but is flexible to allow the items to adjust and fit all reasonably expectable resolutions.

Flex design on larger screen resolution

The same design in a flash layout doesn't flex for the website's viewer. In this case much of the website, especially the links on the left, are missing from the viewer's screen.

Flash designed fixed size

Although the flash layout allows attractive options for the site's designs, making the entire site a fixed width flash image causes problems for lower screen resolutions, especially portable devices like the iPhone.
